Sun UltraSPARC IV & IV+ are a big success

The Sun Microsystems UltraSPARC IV and UltraSPARC IV+ processors configured in Sun's new Midrange and High-End servers are setting new world record SPEC benchmarks. These new CPU's feature 2MB of Level 2 Cache plus 16MB or 32MB of Level 3 Cache per CPU. This Cache is critical to the performance of many applications. We are very pleased to see that Sun Microsystems is once again building servers that are breaking price and performance records. The success of the new UltraSparc IV and IV+ processors has sent the price of servers configured with the UltraSparc III CU machines tumbling down. A Sun Fire V880 configured with eight CPU's and 16GB of memory, that had an original list price of $99,995, was selling for $35,395 on the refurbished market six months ago. Today that same machine is selling for $16,495. That is a 53% price drop in only 6-months. At these new price levels the Midrange servers with 8MB of Cache per CPU are priced competitively with Entry-Level servers with only 1MB of Cache per CPU, but offer superior performance for applications that benefit from CPU Cache. We hope that Sun continues to develop successful products. When they do we will keep you up-to-date with the prices for these new products, as well as products that are one or two generations old.
